Deborah joined Halberstadt in the fall of 1986, when she moved to San Francisco to go to law school at UC Hastings. She started her fencing career as an undergrad at San Jose State University, initially learning to fence from Olympian Gay D'Asaro, and then fenced on the SJSU varsity fencing team for the legendary Michael "Stro" D'Asaro, Sr.

Additionally, she has studied fencing with Peter Schifrin, Peter Burchard, Saul Mendoza and Cole Harkness over the past 23 years. She has fenced and competed in all three weapons, but her primary weapon is foil. She has successfully captained women's teams for Halberstadt in all three weapons.

She coached at UC Berkeley for two years. She currently teaches the adult intermediate class and adult competitive class at Halberstadt, and also gives individual lessons.
