Halberstadt Sabre Challenge 2008 - Another Success! |
|
The first Halberstadt Sabre Challenge in more than 15 years was a resounding success! We had fencers come from all over California and as far away as Iran (via Nevada). The men’s field was 26 strong, with lots of experienced fencers, making it a B2 tournament. Not only did the winner, Soheil Khavandi, walk away with a shiny new B2008, he also took home a beautifully crafted trophy sword donated by tournament sponsor American Fencers Supply. Our very own Nona Lim won the women’s event and the second trophy sword. | | | | James Oldham and Mary Fontaine won the Kirk Janes Memorial Prize, an award Halberstadt members created in honor of our esteemed teammate Kirk Janes, who was tragically killed last month in a bicycle-car collision. Their names were engraved on a beautiful plaque that will take pride of place on the Halberstadt wall. The engraved plaque was donated by Rod Gilchrist, owner of 123-Awards. He also did a great job with the T-shirts and medals. Special thanks to Matthew Porter of American Fencers Supply, who provided gear for sale and also donated his expertise as an international armorer when some last-minute equipment repair was needed. We also want to thank the kind folks at Gu, who donated a case of the sports gel favored by fencers who need a quick energy boost before a tough DE bout. One last shout-out to international referee Derek Cotton, who taught a well-attended and informative referees’ clinic the evening before the tournament. Thanks to all who came, and we hope to see you again next year at this event! | | |
